There are domain-related factors, on-site factors, off-page factors, site-level factors, and numerous technical SEO factors that affect where your website is on Google search results pages (SERPs) for various keywords related to your industry.

However, the question arises: does each ranking factor have the same meaning? No. Although all of these criteria relate to where you finish ranking on Google, there are several factors you should focus on before they solve the rest.

To date, Google knows that this website is probably the authority in the field of pest prevention. The site, therefore, has a much better chance of ranking high on the blog about plant-friendly pesticides than the article on, say, Google ranking factors – even if this article is optimized for keywords and exceptionally well written.

  1. Keyword Selection

Topics may be more critical in the long run than individual keywords, but that doesn’t mean that keywords are still not a ranking factor. Keyword optimization is one of the most critical factors that can be included in your website’s SEO strategy.

The earliest iteration of Google searched for most instances of the keyword, expressed literally, on a webpage or blog. This was known as “exact match.”

Today, “exact match” means something completely different, and the site that has the most occurrences of the keyword does not have the highest position for that keyword. Instead, it is the website that best matches the goals of the keyword.

Let’s consider our example of gardening from the first ranking factor on this list again. If this site wants to get the rank of the keyword ‘best organic pesticides’, it will not position itself well only by including three words in the phrase several times throughout the article. Instead, it should contain the keyword at least once, followed by real examples of organic pesticides, their ingredients where they can be bought, why they are so highly rated, and maybe even what makes these pesticides natural.

Because the readers will take a quick look at it, the websites that give it to them will be more engaged by site visitors. Then Google interprets this increased engagement as a right answer to the visitor’s question, resulting in a higher URL rank.

  1. Content structure

It is not enough to provide website visitors with the information they are looking for. As more and more websites give visitors the right answers, the way they are structured becomes an important deciding factor when ranking content under more competitive keywords.

Proper content formatting demands a variety of headers and subtitles to help the user learn and understand the answer. It can also contain bulleted points, numbered lists, support images, and cited research – all this helps keep readers engaged in your content.
